Data capacity of electronic gadgets has vastly increased and the internet speed has definitely improved much over the years everywhere.
I can’t fathom why even some great uploaders still stick to 32kbps.
All said and done, respect and thanx to you for going through all the trouble for us and posting a the above work.
thanx
:)

Well, it’s pretty amazing!! :D
the sound quality is good and amazing for 32 kbps rip.
Thanx once again
:)

Hi Zulk
I used to use a higher bitrate until I read up un the topic - see the article below
https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1846814,00.asp
If you’re used to ripping music CDs, you know that higher bit rates make your music sound better. This is because the compression used at low bit rates removes much of the detail, But voices don’t require anywhere near the 20- to 20,000-Hz frequency range that music does (that’s why a telephone conversation sounds acceptable at 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz). Since spoken-word recordings are just voice, you can use very low bit rates and save space.
Digital audiobooks generally use a 32-Kbps bit rate.

Thanks for the informative article, sir.
I am a complete novice where ripping is concerned but I have listened to a fair share of audiobooks, thanks to this (addictive) site.
According to my experience 64 kbps ripped audio sounds crispier, clear & louder than 32 kbps rips.
However, I agree with you that, if done correctly & with expertise, 32 kbps has its advantages.
I must accept that you have done an excellent job, saved us data space and download time too.
:D

Yet you don’t want to listen to a whole book in the sound quality of a telephone conversation. You want it to sound like a person reading next to you.
Having collected about ~500GB of audiobooks, it is a fact to me that almost *every* 32k encode is inferior. It *can* be done well, but rarely is.
To optimize quality-for-space, rather encode in VBR. Maybe with a reasonable lowpass filter setting. And for heaven’s sake, dont encode audiobooks in stereo if it’s not t audibly stereo in the first place.
Or at least do the “usual” 64k encode that will sound OK-ish even if made in stereo CBR.

P.S.
Sorry if that sounded a bit snotty. But regrettably I have to pass on your release because it’s just sounding meh. You do put your time and energy into encode and seed - and thanks for that - but IMO it’s a waste of time if it’s just sounding meh.
Suggestion: Use whatever program for the encode will allow you to put a lame.exe with command line options.
You can even use foobar for it:
- right-click one or many audio files in foobar:convert:”…”
- output format:add new:custom
– encoder file:
– extension:mp3
– parameters: my suggestion would be
“–silent –noreplaygain -V2 -q 0 -m m –lowpass 16 - %d”
(”-V0 to -V9″ being the quality from high to low)
(”-q 0″ being the highest algorithm quality)
(”-m m” being a mono encode)
(”–lowpass 16″ being a lowpass filter of 16kHz)
– bit depth: lossy, 24
– Display: this is all optional, you can describe your settings made as above here
- OK; back; convert.
Maybe you give it a try :)

A lot of books are downloaded from sites such as “Audible” at 32Kbps.
People often incorrectly assume that increasing the bitrate will increase the quality.
This is not so. Once downloaded the quality cannot be improved so increasing the bitrate will only bloat the file size. This seems patently obvious.
I could increase the size of these files but it would not improve their quality.
Increasing the file size cannot add any more clarity to the original download

P.P.S.
Groan. This board formats removes angel brackets and makes double dastes a longer dash.
- “encoder file” is of course the path to your lame.exe from http://www.rarewares.org/mp3-lame-bundle.php
- there is a double dash in front of “silent”, “noreplaygain” and “lowpass” in the suggested parameter string. Full command line reference: http://ecmc.rochester.edu/ecmc/docs/lame/switchs.html
*end of spam*

Bogusbelly: Yes, of course no one should ever re-encode an already bad-sounding audio book. Bloated encodes are more frustrating than niggard encodes. ;)
All my spam was about making one’s own rips, or re-encoding a high-quality-but-oversized audiobook.

Bogusbelly, you are humble, kind and generous. :)
I have no words to thank you enough.
