1839. Trade is the stalwart of the British Empire. China threatens Britain’s Opium trade. Britain and China go to war.
When Britain sent troops to compel the Chinese to accept imports of opium, they opened what is argued to be one of the most disgraceful chapters in the history of the Empire.
How did the situation arise? How did opium exports become so crucial to the British economy? How did the British come to be as addicted to opium revenue as the Chinese were to the drug itself?
Brian Inglis gives the answers to these and other questions in this meticulously researched study of The Opium War . Shocking, shaming, but fascinating throughout.
‘Inglis has given us a brisk, lucid and detailed account’ – Philip Mason, The Spectator
‘Scholarly and very readable’ - The Listener
‘A searching examination of one incident in our chequered history which even dyed-in-the-wool Britons will find hard to defend’ - Yorkshire Post
Brian Inglis was an Irish journalist, historian and TV presenter. He was popularly known in Britain as the presenter for All Our Yesterdays. His publications covered a range of topics, including biographies, medicine and the paranormal. Other books by Inglis include The Forbidden A Social History of Drugs and The Story of Ireland , amongst many others.

Hey Roundeye you feel sad? I sell you fentanyl. It luv you long time.
Fentanyl = cheap cheap. Narcan = very expensive
.
** Over-the-counter Narcan may be too expensive for some people, advocates fear **
The opioid overdose reversal drug Narcan will soon be available over-the-counter at a cost of about $44.
it’s the first time Narcan will be available nationwide without a prescription.

Disaster capitalism is alive & well
We learn from you roundeye - payback’s a B
BTW dumb US sanctions failed again (never worked). Huawei now makes their own chip - eat my dust Roundeye.
USA, the pimp of progress uses sanctions to slow down the competition. It’ll really hurt when Silicone Valley moves back to India. I’m sure the ‘proud boys’ can step in & do just as well since they is so smart-N-stuff.

“disgraceful” “shame”
Feel bad, white man. Feel so, so bad. Never stop feeling bad about what some other white men did hundreds of years ago.

While @apnea recovers from whatever seizure brought about their word-vomit, my concern is for Nick_Kerr who seems to be the world’s most sensitive person. It isn’t history’s fault how “White” people treated Asians in the 19th and early 20th centuries. And it’s a tit-for-tat that’s stupid and never ends–White people did this; well, Asians did this; but what these Whites did here is worse; no, no, what the Asians did here makes everything Whites did pale in comparison…and on and on. Every demographic has their POSs. Every demographic has something hanging over them for what happened in the past. Every demographic has looked at ‘others’ and decided they were lesser and prime for exploitation. The point isn’t to feel bad but rather repulsed at the behavior and actions so many justified *at the time*. If we are collectively repulsed then it stands to reason it won’t happen again. It’s that collective that suffers today due to nonsensical justifications like apnea’s embolism created for all to enjoy.

Malachie520, if you follow me - hate everyone equally - you’ll never get triggered or feel upset again. Unless you’re a sports fan. Those nutters are beyond my ability to cure.
